How to Exercise your Brain

They say that dog is a man’s best friend from the world of living beings.  In the world of things, however, what has lasting value and bears the title of man’s best friend is the book.  Victor Hugo said that “The spirit that does not read loses weight, as a body that does not eat”.

April 23rd has been established by UNESCO as World Book Day.  It is not a random date for world literature, as it was on this date in 1616 that three famous representatives of it died: the Spaniard Miguel de Cervantes, the English William Shakespeare and the Peruvian Inca Garcilaso de la Vega.

Many claim that the book in its traditional form, is heading towards extinction due to new technologies, but the value and magic of a tangible book is timeless, unique and irreplaceable.

Surveys and studies have shown that reading a book can provide many benefits to the reader, many more than any other kind of entertainment.  Let us enumerate some of those benefits, which demonstrate that the right place for a book is in our hands and not in a dusty library.  Reading has the following positive effects:

It strengthens the brain.  According to a research published in the journal «Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences», adults who read are less likely to develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Against anxiety.  Research conducted at the University of Sussex showed that reading is the most effective way to cope with stress.

Better perception.  According to a study published in the journal “Science”, those who read literature, can “read” easier the mind of other people.

Memory improvement.  Another study published in the journal «Neurology», showed that those who in their lifetime were engaged in activities that stimulate the brain, such as reading, showed a lower rate of memory impairment as compared to those who did not.

Ease in expression.  Regular reading of books ensures competence to the written and spoken word, refined thinking, more imagination and creativity.

Rational thought.  Reading helps to objective and rational use of the mind.

Knowledge.  Whatever we read, it fills our mind with new information that may once be useful to us, so it and the more knowledge we have, the better prepared we are to face any challenge in our life.

Tranquility feeling.  The reading of spiritual texts can reduce blood pressure and bring an incredible feeling of relaxation and tranquility.

Better sleep.  Reading some pages is usually enough for sweet dreams.

It is worth mentioning that a study published in the scientific magazine “Journal of Consumer Research” showed that we benefit not only when we read a new book, but also when we read for a second or third time a book that we liked a lot.  The re-reading of a favorite book from the past, acts soothingly on our psyche, causing us a more intense feeling of satisfaction, increased knowledge and mental alertness, while we experiencing anew the emotions that it had caused us when we first read it, only even more strongly than the first time.

Revitalize your spirit, soul and body with a book …it’s good for you!
